Finding new ways to heal
As a diabetic, you are likely to suffer from a loss of feeling in your feet, which increases your risk of developing a wound or ulcer on your foot. It is estimated that approximately 15% of diabetic patients will develop foot-related wounds. Diabetic ulcers are susceptible to infection that may eventually lead to amputation of the affected toe, foot or leg.
Advances in medical research mean that new technologies for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers may be available. The MATRIX clinical study for diabetic foot ulcers is currently enrolling patients in the United States to test the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication called Excellarate™ (also known as GAM501). Excellarate is designed to stimulate wound healing and is topically applied once or twice over the course of the study.
You may be eligible to participate in the MATRIX clinical research study if:
- You have a wound on your foot that has been there for 6 weeks or more; and
- You have been diagnosed with diabetes that requires treatment with insulin
or other medication to control your blood sugars.
To find out if you may qualify for the MATRIX clinical research study, please

determination of your eligibility to participate will be made by one of our participating
healthcare providers in your area.
Excellarate is an investigational medication and is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Clinical research testing, such as the MATRIX clinical research study, is required to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational product before it may be approved by the FDA for marketing.
